Malaga airport continues to grow in numbers

25 May 2015

Malaga airport has continued to grow in passengers during the first quarter of 2015, to the glee of major airlines. Among the top five airlines, the increases between January and April have ranged from EasyJet’s 0.3% increase to Air Europa’s 13.4%, according to the statistics of Spanish Airports and Air Navigation. Expanding the analysis to the first fourteen airlines, all have grown except for just five. This could be a record braking exercise, since during the first four months of the year, the airport managed to raise their users’ numbers by 4.7%, when compared to the same period during 2014, to account for a total of 3.5 million. Thus, if the trend continues, Malaga airport could reach or exceed 14 million passengers, which would become a historical record, showing a strong transfer of confidence in the Costa del Sol market.

Ryanair continues to be the undisputed leader, having occupied the top of the ranking several years, mainly due to their large number of direct connections from the airport at the capital with several European countries. Between January and April, the Irish airline transported more than 683.000 passengers through the airport, representing an increase of 6.9% over the same period last year. Last year, as a whole, Ryanair transferred 2.68 million passengers at Malaga, 3.8% less than in 2013, showing positive numbers during this financial period.
